What is PCQI Certification?

PCQI

The FSMA Preventive Controls Rule for Human Food and the Preventive Controls Rule for Animal Food mandate that facilities have a “Preventive Controls Qualified Individual” (PCQI) on staff. However, it is important to note that the requirement is for a “Qualified Individual,” not a “Certified Individual.” This means that while there is no official certification for PCQIs, there are specific qualifications that an individual must possess to fulfill the role.

To clarify, there is no such thing as PCQI certification, and no one can be PCQI certified. Instead, individuals must demonstrate that they have the necessary training and qualifications to become a PCQI.

To comply with FSMA regulations, facilities must ensure that at least one PCQI is on staff and has the necessary qualifications to oversee the implementation of preventive controls in their food safety plan. It is the responsibility of the facility to identify a suitable candidate who possesses the necessary training and qualifications to fulfill the role of PCQI.
