Moving from HACCP to ISO 22000
ISO 22000 is quickly growing in popularity. A hybrid of the ISO 9001 Quality Management System and the HACCP Food Safety system, 22000 has been developed as an international solution for improving food safety.
How do companies already using a HACCP system make the transition to a 22000 Food Safety Management System (FSMS)?
The first step is to familiarize yourself with Management System Fundamentals. Management Systems go beyond traditional quality control and address how quality is managed through the company- from setting business goals and objectives to maintaining food safety as product is shipped.
If you already have HACCP in place, part of your work is already done. You will need to add Food Safety Management Processes to address the other sections of the standard to complete your management system. Additional processes include those such as:
- Document Control
- Control of Quality Records
- Management Responsibility
- Communication
- Emergency Preparedness
- Competence, Awareness and Training
- Infrastructure
- Work Environment
- Control of Nonconformity
- Verification Planning
- Traceability
- Validation of Control Measures
- Control of Monitoring and Measuring Devices
- Food Safety Management System Verification, and
- Internal Audits
